Reading Your Chart: The Diamond Method
At first glance, your chart looks like a complex geometric puzzle. In Vedic Astrology, we use the North Indian (Diamond) Style chart. It is distinct from the South Indian (Square) style or the Western circular wheel.
Here is the secret code to reading it.
1. The Golden Rules
Rule #1: The Houses NEVER Move
The chart is divided into 12 "Houses" (triangles and diamonds).
- The Top-Center Diamond is ALWAYS the 1st House (Lagna/Ascendant).
- The houses follow a counter-clockwise direction.
- Top Diamond = 1st House (Self)
- Top Left Triangle = 2nd House (Wealth)
- Left Triangle = 3rd House (Siblings)
- Bottom Left Diamond = 4th House (Home)
- Bottom Left Triangle = 5th House (Children)
- Bottom Triangle = 6th House (Enemies)
- Bottom Right Diamond = 7th House (Marriage)
- Bottom Right Triangle = 8th House (Transformation)
- Right Triangle = 9th House (Fortune)
- Top Right Diamond = 10th House (Career)
- Top Right Triangle = 11th House (Gains)
- Top Triangle = 12th House (Loss)
No matter what numbers are written inside, the position of the house is fixed. This is the defining feature of the North Indian style — the houses are anchored to the diagram, and the signs rotate through them based on the native's Ascendant.
Rule #2: The Numbers are SIGNS (Rashis)
This is the #1 point of confusion. Inside each diamond/triangle, you will see a number (e.g., 5, 9, 12).
- These numbers represent the Zodiac Sign sitting in that house.
- They do NOT represent the House number.
Complete Sign Key:
| Number | Sign (English) | Sign (Sanskrit) | Element | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aries | Mesha (मेष) | Fire | Cardinal |
| 2 | Taurus | Vrishabha (वृषभ) | Earth | Fixed |
| 3 | Gemini | Mithuna (मिथुन) | Air | Mutable |
| 4 | Cancer | Karka (कर्क) | Water | Cardinal |
| 5 | Leo | Simha (सिंह) | Fire | Fixed |
| 6 | Virgo | Kanya (कन्या) | Earth | Mutable |
| 7 | Libra | Tula (तुला) | Air | Cardinal |
| 8 | Scorpio | Vrishchika (वृश्चिक) | Water | Fixed |
| 9 | Sagittarius | Dhanu (धनु) | Fire | Mutable |
| 10 | Capricorn | Makara (मकर) | Earth | Cardinal |
| 11 | Aquarius | Kumbha (कुम्भ) | Air | Fixed |
| 12 | Pisces | Meena (मीन) | Water | Mutable |
Example:
If you see the number 10 in the top-center diamond:
- House: It is the 1st House (Self).
- Sign: The sign is Capricorn (10).
- Meaning: You have a Capricorn Ascendant.
Because signs flow consecutively, the 2nd house (top-left triangle) will contain 11 (Aquarius), the 3rd house will contain 12 (Pisces), and so on around the chart.
2. The Planets (Grahas)
You will see abbreviations like Su, Mo, Ma, etc., scattered around the chart. These show where the planets were located at your birth.
The Nine Vedic Planets
| Abbreviation | Planet | Sanskrit | Signification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Su | Sun | Surya (सूर्य) | Soul, authority, father, government |
| Mo | Moon | Chandra (चंद्र) | Mind, emotions, mother, nurturing |
| Ma | Mars | Mangal (मंगल) | Energy, courage, brothers, property |
| Me | Mercury | Budha (बुध) | Intellect, speech, business, friends |
| Ju | Jupiter | Guru (गुरु) | Wisdom, children, spirituality, wealth |
| Ve | Venus | Shukra (शुक्र) | Love, marriage, luxury, art |
| Sa | Saturn | Shani (शनि) | Discipline, karma, delays, service |
| Ra | Rahu | Rahu (राहु) | Obsession, foreign, unconventional, amplification |
| Ke | Ketu | Ketu (केतु) | Detachment, past lives, spirituality, loss |
If Ju is in the top diamond with the number 10:
- Jupiter is in the 1st House in the sign of Capricorn.
Reading Planetary Degree
AstroCalc displays each planet's exact degree alongside its abbreviation (e.g., Ju 14°22'). This degree is critical for:
- Determining which Nakshatra (lunar mansion) the planet occupies
- Calculating Divisional Chart placements (D9, D10, etc.)
- Identifying exact aspect relationships between planets
- Assessing planetary war (Graha Yuddha) when two planets are within 1° of each other
3. The House Significance Map
Each of the 12 houses governs specific life areas. Here is the complete map:
The Kendras (Angular Houses): 1, 4, 7, 10
These are the pillars of the chart — the four corners that hold everything together.
- 1st House (Lagna): Self, body, personality, health, general fortune. This is YOU.
- 4th House (Sukha Sthana): Home, mother, emotional peace, property, vehicles, education.
- 7th House (Kalatra Sthana): Marriage, business partnerships, public image, the "other."
- 10th House (Karma Sthana): Career, status, public reputation, father's legacy, government.
Planets in Kendras gain directional strength (Dig Bala) and become capable of producing major life events.
The Trikonas (Trinal Houses): 1, 5, 9
These are the houses of luck, merit, and divine grace.
- 1st House: (Shared with Kendras) The self.
- 5th House (Putra Sthana): Children, intelligence, creativity, past-life merit, romance, speculative gains.
- 9th House (Dharma Sthana): Fortune, father, guru, religion, higher education, long-distance travel, ethics.
The 5th and 9th are called Lakshmi Sthanas — houses of the Goddess of Prosperity. Benefic planets here bestow grace.
The Upachaya Houses: 3, 6, 10, 11
Houses that improve with time. Malefic planets (Mars, Saturn, Rahu) actually do well here — their toughness becomes a productive force.
- 3rd House: Siblings, courage, communication, short travels, self-effort.
- 6th House: Enemies, disease, debts, service, daily work, competition.
- 10th House: (Shared with Kendras) Career action.
- 11th House (Labha Sthana): Gains, income, elder siblings, social network, fulfillment of desires.
The Trik Houses: 6, 8, 12
The houses of difficulty, suffering, and transformation.
- 6th House: Open enemies, acute illness, debt, legal disputes. However, victory over these is also shown here.
- 8th House (Ayu Sthana): Longevity, sudden events, inheritance, hidden things, occult, chronic illness, transformation.
- 12th House (Vyaya Sthana): Loss, expenditure, foreign residence, hospitalization, spiritual liberation (Moksha), sleep, bed pleasures.
The Maraka Houses: 2, 7
- 2nd House (Dhana Sthana): Wealth, family, speech, food, face, death-inflicting (Maraka) potential.
- 7th House: (Shared with Kendras) Marriage — but also the second Maraka. Planets ruling the 2nd and 7th can trigger health crises during their Dashas.
4. The Three Chart Styles
Vedic Astrology uses three major chart formats. Understanding all three helps when consulting different astrologers or texts.
North Indian (Diamond) Style
- Used by: AstroCalc, most North Indian astrologers
- Key feature: Houses are fixed; signs rotate
- Reading direction: Counter-clockwise from top
- Advantage: Easy to see house relationships (aspects, trines, oppositions) at a glance
- 1st House position: Always at the top center
South Indian (Square) Style
- Used by: South Indian astrologers, many classical texts
- Key feature: Signs are fixed; houses rotate
- Reading direction: Clockwise from the marked Ascendant
- Advantage: Easy to see which sign a planet is in, regardless of the Ascendant
- Pisces position: Always in the top-left corner
In the South Indian style, the 12 boxes are laid out in a 4×3 grid, and the signs occupy fixed positions. The Ascendant is marked with a diagonal line in whichever box it falls. To read the houses, you start from the marked box and count clockwise.
Western (Circular Wheel) Style
- Used by: Western astrologers, some modern Vedic software
- Key feature: Circular wheel with the Ascendant on the left horizon
- Advantage: Visually intuitive for understanding planetary positions relative to the horizon and meridian
- Limitation: Harder to spot classical Vedic yogas (combinations) because the geometric relationships differ from the diamond format
Which Style Does AstroCalc Use?
AstroCalc uses the North Indian (Diamond) style as the default display. This was chosen because:
- House-based analysis is central to Vedic prediction, and fixed houses make house relationships immediately visible
- The diamond format preserves the geometric relationships (opposition, trine, square) that define Vedic aspects
- Most users in the primary audience (India, diaspora) are familiar with this format
5. Reading Planetary Aspects (Drishti)
In Vedic Astrology, planets "look at" (aspect) other houses. These aspects transmit the planet's energy to that house.
Universal Aspect
Every planet aspects the 7th house from itself (the house directly opposite). This is the universal, default aspect.
Special Aspects (Vishesh Drishti)
Three planets have additional special aspects:
- Mars: Also aspects the 4th and 8th houses from itself. Mars's gaze is aggressive — it brings energy, conflict, and action to those houses.
- Jupiter: Also aspects the 5th and 9th houses from itself. Jupiter's gaze is protective and expansive — it blesses those houses with wisdom, growth, and good fortune.
- Saturn: Also aspects the 3rd and 10th houses from itself. Saturn's gaze is restrictive — it brings discipline, delays, and karmic lessons to those houses.
How to Read Aspects on the Chart
When you see a planet in a specific house, immediately check:
- The 7th house from it (all planets)
- If it is Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn, check their special aspect houses too
- Any house receiving multiple malefic aspects (Saturn + Mars, or Saturn + Rahu) is under heavy pressure — expect challenges in that life area
6. The D9 Navamsa Chart
You will often see a second chart labeled "D9" or "Navamsa."
- Read it the exact same way!
- Top Diamond = 1st House.
- Numbers = Signs.
- This chart reveals the inner strength of your planets and the quality of your marriage.
Why the D9 Matters
A planet might be weak in the main chart (D1) but strong in the D9 — this means you grow into your strength over time. Conversely, a planet strong in D1 but weak in D9 may deliver initially but fail to sustain its promise.
The D9 is so important that classical texts say: "The Navamsa is half of astrology." No serious Vedic prediction is made without checking the D9.
Key D9 Indicators for Marriage
- The 7th house of D9: The nature of the spouse and the quality of the marriage
- Venus in D9 (for males): The wife's character and the native's romantic nature
- Jupiter in D9 (for females): The husband's character and the native's dharmic path
- D9 Lagna lord placement: The native's approach to partnership

8. Your First Chart Reading: A Step-by-Step Guide
Here is how to approach your AstroCalc chart for the very first time:
Step 1: Find Your Ascendant
Look at the top-center diamond. The number there is your Rising Sign. This is the foundation of your entire chart — it colors everything.
Step 2: Locate the Moon
Find Mo on the chart. The house and sign where the Moon sits is your emotional core — your instinctive nature, your comfort zone, and how you process feelings. In Vedic Astrology, the Moon sign is considered more important than the Sun sign for personality analysis.
Step 3: Check the 7th House
Look at the bottom-center diamond (directly opposite the Ascendant). This is your 7th house — the house of marriage and partnerships. What sign is there? Are there any planets? This gives your first clue about your relationship patterns.
Step 4: Find Jupiter and Saturn
These two slow-moving planets define the biggest themes of your life:
- Jupiter's house: Where you experience growth, luck, and wisdom
- Saturn's house: Where you face your hardest lessons, delays, and deepest maturity
Step 5: Open the D9 Navamsa
Switch to the D9 chart on AstroCalc. Compare where your key planets (Lagna Lord, Moon, Venus/Jupiter) sit in D1 versus D9. If they are in better positions in D9, your life improves in the second half. If worse, early promise may fade.
Step 6: Note Your Current Dasha
AstroCalc displays your current Vimshottari Dasha (planetary period). Identify which planet is currently active (the Mahadasha lord). Find that planet in your D1 chart. The house it sits in, the houses it aspects, and the houses it rules — these are the active zones of your life right now.
9. Classical Sources
- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra: The foundational text for all chart construction, house signification, and Varga computation.
- Brihat Jataka (Varahamihira): Chapters 1–4 provide the clearest classical introduction to chart reading and planetary significations.
- Phaladeepika (Mantreswara): Known for practical, accessible explanations of house meanings and planetary results.
- Jataka Parijata (Vaidyanatha): Detailed treatment of house lords in various positions — the essential reference for house-lord analysis.
Summary
- Locate the Top Diamond. That is You (House 1).
- Read the Number inside. That is your Rising Sign.
- Follow the path counter-clockwise to see the rest of your life (Wealth, Siblings, Home, etc.).
- Find the planets scattered across the houses — they are the actors performing on the stage of your chart.
- Check the D9 Navamsa — it reveals whether those actors can actually deliver their promises.
- Note the current Dasha — it tells you which planet is directing the show right now.
The chart is not a sentence. It is a map. And like any map, its power lies in knowing how to read it.
10. Common Beginner Mistakes
Mistake 1: Confusing House Numbers with Sign Numbers
The most frequent error. Remember: the position on the diagram tells you the house number (always fixed). The number written inside tells you the sign (varies per chart). If someone says "I have Mars in my 7th house," they mean Mars is in the bottom-center diamond — regardless of what number is written there.
Mistake 2: Reading Only the Sun Sign
Western astrology emphasizes the Sun sign. Vedic astrology emphasizes the Ascendant (Lagna) and the Moon sign. Your Sun sign matters, but it is only one of nine planets. The Lagna determines the entire house layout, and the Moon determines your emotional core. If you only know your Sun sign, you are reading less than 15% of your chart.
Mistake 3: Assuming Malefic Planets Are Always Bad
Saturn, Mars, Rahu, and Ketu are called "natural malefics," but they are not always harmful. Saturn in the 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th house can give exceptional results — discipline, competitive edge, and career success. Mars in the 10th gives enormous drive and professional ambition. Context determines whether a malefic is destructive or constructive.
Mistake 4: Ignoring the Dasha Period
Two people with identical birth charts will have radically different experiences if they are in different Dasha periods. The chart is a map of potential; the Dasha is the GPS that determines which part of the map you are currently navigating. Always check the active Dasha before interpreting any chart feature.
Mistake 5: Reading Houses in Isolation
Houses are interconnected. The 2nd house (wealth) and 11th house (income) must be read together to understand financial patterns. The 5th house (children) and 7th house (marriage) interact to reveal the timing and quality of family life. The 1st house (self) and 7th house (partner) are always in tension — strengths in one can compensate for weaknesses in the other.
11. Understanding Planetary Dignity
Not all planets perform equally in every sign. A planet's "dignity" — its relationship with the sign it occupies — fundamentally shapes its behavior.
Exaltation (Uccha)
Each planet has one sign where it is strongest:
- Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo
- Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra
An exalted planet delivers its significations with maximum power and ease.
Debilitation (Neecha)
Each planet has one sign where it is weakest (always the 7th sign from exaltation):
- Sun in Libra, Moon in Scorpio, Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Pisces
- Jupiter in Capricorn, Venus in Virgo, Saturn in Aries
A debilitated planet struggles to deliver results. However, debilitation is not a death sentence — Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga (cancellation of debilitation) can transform a weak planet into a powerful one under specific conditions.
Own Sign (Swa Rashi)
A planet in its own sign is comfortable and confident — like a person working from their own home. It delivers results steadily and reliably.
Friend, Neutral, and Enemy Signs
Each planet has natural friendships and enmities with other planets. A planet in a friendly sign performs reasonably well; in an enemy sign, it faces resistance and friction.
AstroCalc automatically displays each planet's dignity status (exalted, own sign, debilitated, etc.) on the chart view, making it easy to quickly assess planetary strength without manual calculation.
