1. The Vibe: The Mystic Who Has Already Tasted the Nectar

If Rahu is desire that cannot be satisfied, Ketu is the satisfaction that nobody wants. Ketu has already had it. Ketu has already done it. Ketu has already mastered it — in past lives, before this one. Whatever Ketu touches in your chart, you have a deep, intuitive, inexplicable knowing of — but you also have no interest in pursuing it. You are bored of it. You came here to do something else.

Ketu is the Moksha Karaka — the significator of liberation. He is the planet of detachment, renunciation, mysticism, the unseen world, mathematics, intuition, sudden insight, and the "knowing that cannot be taught." Where Rahu obsesses, Ketu walks away. Where Rahu collects, Ketu drops. Where Rahu wants the world, Ketu wants out of the world.

Ketu is the headless body — a body that moves but cannot see normally. He sees through intuition rather than the senses. Native with prominent Ketu often have:

  • Strange psychic experiences
  • Sudden insights with no source
  • Mathematical or musical genius without training
  • Deep dreams, visions, mystical encounters
  • Allergies, phantom illnesses, phantom limb sensations
  • A persistent feeling that "this world isn't quite real"

Ketu rules:

  • Spirituality, mysticism, occult
  • Past-life talents and unlearned skills
  • Mathematics, astronomy, abstract reasoning
  • Detachment, renunciation, monasticism
  • Mystical experiences, visions, dreams
  • Sudden enlightenment or sudden disasters
  • The headless impulse — moving without thinking

2. Mythology: The Body Without a Head

The story of Ketu is the same story as Rahu. They are one being split in half. When Lord Vishnu severed Svarbhanu the demon at the throat (after he had already tasted the nectar of immortality), the head became Rahu (the seizer, the obsession) and the body became Ketu (the headless, the detached).

Both halves are immortal. Both are forever bound to the Moon's orbital nodes. But where Rahu is all mind without body — pure desire — Ketu is all body without mind — pure action without intention, pure being without thought.

The Lessons of Ketu's Mythology:

  1. Ketu has seen the truth and lost interest in the world. His head is gone. He can't pursue worldly things even if he wanted to. This is why Ketu's natives often "fail" at conventional success — not because they aren't capable, but because they cannot care enough to compete.

  2. Ketu acts without an agenda. A body without a head moves on instinct, on memory, on what feels right. Ketu people often make decisions that look irrational but turn out to be deeply right. They "know" without knowing how they know.

  3. Ketu is the most spiritually advanced graha. Saturn is the planet of suffering as a teacher. Jupiter is the planet of grace. But Ketu is the planet of the soul that is already free. Many enlightened beings throughout history had a strong, well-placed Ketu.

5. Special States of Ketu

Always Retrograde

Like Rahu, Ketu always moves backward through the zodiac. He is forever pointed toward the past — toward what you have already mastered.

Ketu's Natural House Affinities

Ketu is generally considered "good" in 3, 6, 11, 12 — the houses of effort, healing, gain, and liberation. He is especially strong in the 12th house (the house of moksha). He is "bad" in 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 (the houses of personal life, where his detachment becomes painful loss).

Ketu in the 12th House

This is the most spiritually significant Ketu placement. The 12th is the house of moksha, and Ketu is the karaka of moksha. Together, they form the strongest indicator of liberation in this lifetime.

Eclipses

  • Solar eclipse near Ketu — different from Rahu's eclipse. Brings sudden detachment, often through loss of authority figures.
  • Lunar eclipse near Ketu — emotional dissolution, mystical experiences, sometimes deep depression with sudden insight.

Pitru Dosha (Ancestral Karma)

Ketu involvement with the Sun, Moon, or 9th lord is one of the indicators of Pitru Dosha — unresolved ancestral karma. The native may have to perform Pitru Tarpan (ancestral rites) or face issues related to fathers, fatherhood, or paternal ancestors.

Ketu and Sudden Spiritual Awakening

Ketu's Mahadasha (7 years in Vimshottari) often brings sudden spiritual awakening, life-path crisis, or the urge to drop everything and "go inward." Many people enter ashrams, monasteries, or spiritual retreats during Ketu Dasha.

9. Friendships of Ketu

Relationship Planets
Friends Mars, Venus, Saturn
Enemies Sun, Moon
Neutral Mercury, Jupiter

Ketu's friendship with Mars is interesting — both are planets of cutting and instinctive action. The Mars-Ketu combination produces surgeons, martial artists, and tantric practitioners. Ketu's enmity with the Sun and Moon comes from the same mythological origin as Rahu's — both nodes hate the light that exposed them.

10. Yogas Featuring Ketu

  • Kala Sarpa Yoga — All planets between Rahu/Ketu axis. Same as Rahu's yoga.
  • Pitru Dosha — Ketu with Sun or 9th lord. Ancestral karma.
  • Mangal-Ketu Yoga — Mars + Ketu. Sudden surgery, fires, intense action, tantric warrior.
  • Ketu-Guru Yoga — Ketu + Jupiter. Mystical wisdom, sage. The "Vairagi Guru" — the dispassionate teacher.

  • Vipreet Raja Yoga — Ketu in 6/8/12 with certain combinations producing sudden enlightenment or enlightenment through suffering.

11. Famous Archetypes

  • Strong Ketu (Sattvic): Realized yogis, great mathematicians (think Ramanujan — pure intuitive math from "the goddess in dreams"), mystics, prophets, spiritual reformers.
  • Ketu in 12th: Renunciates, monks, those who walked away from worldly life completely.
  • Mars-Ketu: Tantric practitioners, surgeons, martial arts masters, martyrs.
  • Afflicted Ketu: Drug casualties, cult victims, those lost in escapism, paranoid mystics.

12. How AstroCalc Displays Ketu

In your AstroCalc chart:

  • Ketu's sign, degree, and Nakshatra are shown.
  • Ketu is always retrograde and exactly 180° opposite Rahu.
  • Kala Sarpa Yoga is detected when all planets are between Rahu and Ketu.

  • Ketu-Guru combinations are noted.
  • The Ketu Mahadasha is 7 years — short but transformative.
  • Pitru Dosha indicators involving Ketu are flagged where applicable.

13. Remedies for an Afflicted Ketu

Ketu remedies are the most spiritual of all the planetary remedies. He cannot be bribed — only honored.

Mantra

  • Beej Mantra: Om Sram Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah
  • Recitation: 108 times on Tuesdays
  • Ketu Gayatri: Om Padmaputraya Vidmahe Amrita Hastaya Dhimahi Tanno Ketuh Prachodayat
  • Ganesha mantras are powerful Ketu remedies — Ganesha is Ketu's deity in modern practice (he is also the headless-then-elephant-headed god, mythologically resonant)
  • Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for severe Ketu afflictions

Gemstone

  • Cat's Eye (Lehsunia / Chrysoberyl) — natural, set in silver or panchaloha (5-metal alloy), worn on the little finger of the right hand
  • Substitute: Tiger's eye, alexandrite
  • Caution: Cat's eye is unpredictable. Always test before wearing permanently.

Day & Fast

  • Ketu has no day of his own; Tuesday (Mars's day) is borrowed
  • Donate multicolored or smoky-colored items, sesame, cotton, multi-grain food
  • Visit Ganesha temples and Subramanya/Murugan temples
  • The Naga temples in India also serve Ketu

Lifestyle

  • Practice meditation — especially silent retreat. Ketu needs silence to function.
  • Spend time alone — Ketu hates crowds. He thrives in solitude.
  • Study a mystical or mathematical subject — astrology, numerology, theoretical physics, advanced math
  • Honor your father's lineage — perform Pitru Tarpan, especially during Pitra Paksha
  • Help animals — especially dogs, who are sometimes considered Ketu's animal
  • Avoid excessive materialism — Ketu doesn't punish wealth, but he doesn't bless it either. He just doesn't care.
  • Avoid drugs and intoxicants — these are dangerous with strong Ketu
  • Develop intuition — trust your gut, especially when it makes no rational sense

Charity

  • Donate to spiritual organizations, monasteries, ashrams
  • Feed dogs (Ketu's animal in some traditions)
  • Support healers, mystics, alternative medicine practitioners
  • Donate at Naga temples and ancestor temples
  • Plant Ashwagandha or other medicinal herbs

14. Edge Cases of Ketu

  • Ketu in 12th is the strongest moksha indication in the entire chart. People with this placement are often "old souls" who have done much spiritual work in past lives. They may struggle with worldly success but have profound inner peace.
  • Ketu's Mahadasha is only 7 years — the shortest of all the Mahadashas — but it can produce the most dramatic life changes. Many people enter spiritual paths or undergo identity dissolution during Ketu Dasha.
  • Ketu shows your past-life mastery — wherever Ketu is, you have a deep, intuitive, unlearned knowing. This is your "gift from the past." But the cosmos doesn't reward you for repeating past mastery — it rewards you for moving toward Rahu's challenges.
  • A debilitated Ketu (Taurus by most modern accounts) is paradoxically more spiritually beneficial than a strong one — because the lack of material orientation is even more pronounced.
  • Ketu in conjunction with the Atmakaraka (the planet with highest degree in your chart) is one of the most powerful indicators of being a "soul who came here for liberation" — the chart of a future enlightened being.
