1. The Vibe: Action, Edge, and the Will to Fight

If the Sun is the King and the Moon is the Queen, Mars is the General — the one who actually goes to war for them. Mars is raw energy. He is what you do when you cannot wait, when you are angry, when you must protect, when you must build, when you must cut. Mars is your courage, your discipline, your physical body, your sex drive, your willingness to take risks. Without Mars, nothing happens.

Mars is action. Saturn is the long, slow grind. Mars is the sharp burst that initiates everything. Mars asks: am I willing to make the first move?

A strong Mars makes you brave, decisive, athletic, focused, and protective of those you love. A weak or afflicted Mars makes you either a coward who freezes, or an angry person who attacks the wrong target — sometimes both in the same day.

The Boardroom Analogy: Mars is the Head of Operations — the COO. While the Sun (CEO) sets vision and Mercury (CFO) runs the spreadsheets, Mars is the one who actually executes. He drives the team. He breaks deadlocks. He fires people when necessary. He doesn't ask for permission. When Mars is healthy, things get done. When Mars is wounded, the company stalls or implodes in conflict.

2. Mythology: The Fierce Son of Earth

In Vedic mythology, Mars is Bhauma — the son of the Earth Goddess (Bhumi Devi). He was born from a single drop of Shiva's perspiration as Shiva sat in deep meditation. The drop fell on Earth, and Earth gave birth to Mars. This is why Mars rules land, real estate, and property — he is literally the child of the Earth.

Mars is also called Kartikeya (the war god) in some traditions, and Subramanya in the south — the eternal warrior, the slayer of demons, the protector of devotees. He is celibate, fiery, and pure-hearted. His vehicle is the peacock — a creature that kills snakes (Mars vs. Rahu/Ketu).

The Lesson of Mars Mythology: Mars is born of struggle. He is what comes out of you when life forces you to grow up and protect what you love. Mars is not anger — anger is what afflicts Mars. True Mars is the courage to act in service of what matters.

5. Special States of Mars

Mars's Special Aspects

Mars is unique among planets — he aspects the 4th, 7th, and 8th houses from his position (in addition to the 7th that all planets cast).

  • 4th aspect: Mars destabilises the home if afflicted (anger in domestic life). If well-placed, gives a strong fortress-like home.
  • 7th aspect: Mars on the spouse — passion or conflict in marriage.
  • 8th aspect: Mars on transformation, occult, sudden events. The "surgical" aspect.

This is why Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th can cause Manglik Dosha — because his aspects fall on the 7th of marriage from these positions, disturbing partnership.

Combustion

Mars combust (within ~17° of the Sun) loses much of his power. The native may have ego conflicts with father, accidents related to authority, or burnt-out nervous energy.

Retrograde Mars

Mars retrograde introduces internalised anger. The native bottles up rage, then explodes. May indicate past-life warrior karma being processed inwardly. Often brilliant strategists or surgeons.

Ruchaka Yoga (Pancha Mahapurusha)

When Mars is in Aries, Scorpio, or Capricorn AND in a Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) from Lagna or Moon, Ruchaka Yoga forms — the highest grade of Mars-driven greatness. Produces military leaders, surgeons of renown, athletic champions. AstroCalc detects Ruchaka under Five Great Beings.

Mangal Dosha (Manglik)

Covered fully in the Manglik chapter. Mars in 1, 4, 7, 8, 12 from Lagna (and from Moon, and from Venus per the strict rule) creates "Mangal Dosha" — disturbance in marriage. AstroCalc calculates and grades Manglik intensity automatically.

9. Friendships of Mars

Relationship Planets
Friends Sun, Moon, Jupiter

Mars dislikes Mercury because Mercury is intellectual cleverness, while Mars is direct action — they speak different languages. Mars loves Sun (the King) and Jupiter (the wise teacher) because both give him noble purpose.

  • Ruchaka Yoga — Mars in own/exalted sign in a Kendra. Pancha Mahapurusha grade. Military/athletic greatness.

  • Mars-Mercury: Engineers, watchmakers, precision craftsmen.
  • Afflicted Mars: Historic dictators with rage, accident-prone celebrities, athletes felled by injury.

12. Mars and Combinations of Pain

  • Mars + Rahu: Angarak Yoga — explosive temper, accidents, blood disorders, scandal involving violence. Often produces high-risk professionals (stunt performers, war correspondents) or, when low, criminals.
  • Mars + Ketu: Surgical karma — surgeons or surgery patients. Spiritual warrior. Fire accidents.
  • Mars + Saturn: Frustration. Action blocked by delay. Joint pain. Wounds that don't heal. But if disciplined, becomes a master craftsman who works for years on one project.
  • Mars debilitated in Cancer: The wounded warrior. Anxiety paralyses action. Healing requires emotional integration first.

13. How AstroCalc Displays Mars

In your AstroCalc chart:

  • Mars's sign, degree, and Nakshatra are shown in the planet panel.

  • Manglik calculation runs automatically: from Lagna, Moon, and Venus, with intensity grading and cancellations.
  • Ruchaka Yoga is detected under Pancha Mahapurusha if Mars is in own/exalted sign and in a Kendra.
  • Mars-Mercury enmity affects the friendship table used in Vimshopaka calculations.
  • In the D9 Navamsa, Mars's position tells you about your marital passion and ability to defend the relationship.

14. Remedies for a Weak or Afflicted Mars

Always consult a qualified astrologer before adopting gemstone remedies.

Mantra

  • Beej Mantra: Om Kram Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah
  • Recitation: 108 times on Tuesdays
  • Mangal Gayatri: Om Veerdhwajaya Vidmahe Vighnahastaya Dhimahi Tanno Bhaumah Prachodayat
  • Hanuman Chalisa is the most powerful Mars remedy — Hanuman is considered Mars's deity in modern Vedic practice

Gemstone

  • Red Coral (Moonga) — natural, set in copper or gold, worn on the ring finger of the right hand
  • Caution: Mars gemstones are powerful and should not be worn casually. If Mars is a malefic in your chart, coral can amplify problems.

Day & Fast

  • Tuesday is Mars's day
  • Fast on Tuesdays, eat once after sunset, prefer wheat and jaggery
  • Donate red lentils (masoor dal), red cloth, copper, or jaggery on Tuesdays
  • Visit Hanuman temples on Tuesdays and Saturdays

Lifestyle

  • Physical exercise — Mars needs to burn energy. Sedentary lifestyle weakens Mars.
  • Martial arts, weight training, running, sports
  • Discipline practices — early rising, cold showers, fasting
  • Avoid suppressing anger; channel it through productive action
  • Donate blood — a classical Mars remedy

Charity

  • Help soldiers, veterans, accident victims
  • Support athletic programs for children
  • Feed dogs (the dog is Mars's companion animal in some traditions)

15. Edge Cases of Mars

  • Mars in Cancer (debilitation) is not always weak — many surgeons have this placement because the emotional empathy + sharp instrument creates a healing combination.
  • Manglik dosha cancels in many cases (see the manglik chapter). A "Manglik" person matched with another Manglik has the dosha mutually cancelled.
  • Mars in 3rd is the BEST house for Mars — even more than its own signs. Brave, disciplined, productive.
  • Mars + Jupiter is one of the kindest combinations — the warrior with ethics. Look for it in good leaders.
  • A weak Mars makes physical exercise the single most important remedy. No amount of gemstones can compensate for laziness.
