The 36 Gunas, Explained Like a Score
When a family says "gun milaye?", they are asking for one number out of 36. It looks like a single verdict, but it is closer to a report card: eight subjects, each worth a different number of marks, all added up.
This page walks through each subject in plain words: what it looks at, what a low or high mark means, and why 18 is the number families keep quoting. The method is the classical Ashtakoota (eight-part) system, as used in the Parashari tradition.
Everything below comes from just two things per person: the Moon sign and the Moon's nakshatra (birth star) at the time of birth. That is why a Guna Milan only needs a birth date, time and place.
How the 36 add up
| Part (koota) | What it looks at | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | Work temperament (Moon-sign group) | 1 |
| Vashya | Mutual pull, who adjusts to whom | 2 |
| Tara | Luck and well-being together | 3 |
| Yoni | Physical comfort, instinct | 4 |
| Graha Maitri | Friendship of minds | 5 |
| Gana | Temperament, reaction to stress | 6 |
| Bhakoot | Emotional bond, family and money harmony | 7 |
| Nadi | Health and family line | 8 |
| Total | 36 |
Notice the weights. The last three parts (Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi) carry 21 of the 36 marks. That is why families ask about Nadi and Bhakoot first: they are where the big swings happen. You can read more about those two in Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha.
The eight parts, one by one
Varna: work temperament (1 mark)
A light, traditional check on the two Moon signs. The classical texts place each Moon sign in one of four groups, ranked: Brahmana (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), Kshatriya (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Vaishya (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) and Shudra (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). The rule is that the groom's group should be the same as or higher than the bride's. It is a yes-or-no part: 1 mark or 0.
- Low (0): the bride's group is higher than the groom's. Tradition does not favour that, but it is only 1 mark out of 36 and says nothing about how you will work together.
- High (1): the groom's group is the same as or higher than the bride's.
With only 1 mark at stake, it almost never changes the overall picture. About 6 in 10 couples get the mark.
Vashya: mutual pull (2 marks)
Each Moon sign belongs to a group (four-footed, human, water, wild, or insect). Vashya asks how naturally the two groups pull towards each other. AstroCalc scores it 0.5, 1 or 2.
- Low (0.5): the pull is light, so the bond grows more from time together and effort.
- High (2): an easy natural adjustment to each other.
Tara: luck together (3 marks)
Count from one person's birth nakshatra to the other's. The count falls into nine "tara" types, and three of them (Vipat, Pratyak and Naidhana) are the ones tradition finds uneasy.
- Low (0): the count lands on one of those three types. AstroCalc softens this to half marks (1.5) when the lords of the two Moon signs are friends.
- High (3): the birth stars support each other.
Yoni: physical comfort (4 marks)
Each nakshatra has a symbolic animal (horse, elephant, cat and so on). Yoni compares the two animals, and scores from 0 to 4.
- Low (0 to 1): your instincts differ more than in most pairs. The classical "natural enemy" pairs (cat and rat, dog and deer, serpent and mongoose, and a few others) score 0. Patience and open talk matter here.
- High (3 to 4): the same or a friendly animal. Comfort comes naturally.
Graha Maitri: friendship of minds (5 marks)
This compares the two planets that rule your Moon signs, and whether they are friends, neutral or rivals. It gives a spread of scores from 0 to 5. If both Moon signs have the same ruler (Taurus and Libra, both Venus, for example), it counts as the full 5.
- Low (0 to 1): the two lords are not natural friends, so you may think differently. Many strong couples start here and learn each other.
- High (4 to 5): you get on well mentally, and talking things out feels easy.
Gana: temperament (6 marks)
Every nakshatra belongs to one of three temperaments: Deva (gentle), Manushya (balanced) and Rakshasa (intense and direct). The word "Rakshasa" sounds harsh, but it just means strong-willed.
- High (6): the same gana, or Deva with Manushya.
- Low (1 or 0): Deva with Rakshasa scores 1 in AstroCalc; Manushya with Rakshasa scores 0. It reflects different paces: calm and fiery. Understanding each other's pace helps.
Bhakoot: emotional bond (7 marks)
Count the Moon signs from one person to the other. Three kinds of distance (2/12, 5/9 and 6/8) get 0; everything else gets the full 7. It is all or nothing, and a "0" is often cancelled. Details are in Bhakoot dosha.
Nadi: health and family line (8 marks)
Every nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis. Different nadis score 8; the same nadi scores 0, unless one of the classical exceptions applies. About one pair in three shares a nadi, so it is common. Details are in Nadi dosha.
Why 18 is the traditional minimum
18 is exactly half of 36. Tradition used it as the practical floor: below half, the match was thought to need a careful second look, so families usually asked the pandit before going ahead.
A common rule of thumb, and the one AstroCalc follows:
| Score | Plain reading |
|---|---|
| Below 18 | Below the usual minimum. Talk it through with your pandit. |
| 18 to 24 | Workable match. Look at which parts are low. |
| 25 to 32 | Good match. Most parts line up. |
| 33 to 36 | Excellent match. |
These are guidelines used by families and pandits, not a law. Different websites draw the "good" line at 24 or 25. For the common questions behind this table, see Is 24 guna enough?
One thing helps with perspective: a pair that shares a Nadi (and has no exception) loses 8 marks, so its best possible score is 28. That is still a "good" match by the table above.
What the score cannot tell you
The 36 gunas measure how two Moons fit together. That is useful, but it is one lens. The score does not look at:
- The 7th house, Venus and Jupiter in each chart, which describe the marriage itself.
- Manglik status (Mars placement), which is checked separately. See The Manglik Dosha.
- The dasha running for each person, meaning the timing of life phases.
- Who the two people actually are. Values, family situations, and willingness to talk are things no chart replaces.
Used well, the score is a starting point for a conversation, not a final answer. For the bigger picture, read Matchmaking: Beyond the Score.
