Nadi Dosha: What It Is and When It's Cancelled

5 min read

Nadi is the part of Guna Milan that families ask about first, because it carries the most marks: 8 out of 36. When two people share the same Nadi, that part scores 0 and people say "Nadi dosha". The worry is understandable, but the full picture is calmer: it is common, it has recognised exceptions, and it does not decide a match on its own.

What Nadi is

Each of the 27 nakshatras (birth stars) is assigned one of three Nadis: Adi, Madhya or Antya. Your Nadi comes from your Moon's nakshatra at birth. Nine nakshatras fall under each Nadi:

Nadi Nakshatras
Adi Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada
Madhya Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada
Antya Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishaka, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

The scoring is simple. Different Nadis score 8. The same Nadi scores 0, unless an exception applies.

Why tradition cares

The classical texts link the three Nadis to body constitution (the Ayurvedic ideas of Vata, Pitta and Kapha) and say a couple with the same Nadi may not balance each other's constitution. The old reading connects this to health and to children.

Two honest notes. First, this is a traditional idea, not a medical test. If health is the real concern, a standard pre-marriage health check with a doctor tells you far more than a Nadi can. Second, because there are only three Nadis, about one random pair in three shares one. If it were a serious barrier, a third of all matches would be ruled out, and tradition never meant that. That is why the exceptions exist.

When Nadi dosha is cancelled

AstroCalc applies three classical exceptions. If any one applies, the full 8 marks are given back and the part is shown as "cancelled".

1. Same nakshatra, different pada. Each nakshatra is divided into four quarters (padas). If both Moons are in the same nakshatra but in different padas, the dosha is cancelled. Example: both people are Rohini, but one is in the 1st pada and the other in the 3rd.

2. Different nakshatra, same Moon sign. If both Moons are in the same sign but in different nakshatras, the dosha is cancelled. Example: Krittika (2nd to 4th pada) and Rohini are both in Taurus and both Antya. Because the Moon sign is shared, the exception applies.

3. Different sign and nakshatra, but the same nakshatra lord. Every nakshatra has a ruling planet in the dasha system. If both nakshatras share the same ruler, the dosha is cancelled. Example: Ashwini and Mula are both Adi and both ruled by Ketu. Punarvasu and Purva Bhadrapada are both Adi and both ruled by Jupiter.

The case that stays as it is

If both people share the same nakshatra and the same pada, none of the three exceptions applies. AstroCalc shows 0 for Nadi and adds a note to confirm with your pandit. Some pandits apply further exceptions beyond these three, so a 0 here is a reason to ask, not a final answer.

A worked example

Suppose Person A has Moon in Hasta (Adi) and Person B has Moon in Mula (Adi). The Nadi is the same, so the part starts at 0. Hasta and Mula are different nakshatras, and they fall in different signs (Virgo and Sagittarius). Hasta is ruled by the Moon and Mula by Ketu, so no exception applies. The part stays at 0/8.

Now change Person B to Ashwini (Adi, ruled by Ketu), with Person A in Mula (Adi, ruled by Ketu). Same Nadi, but the same nakshatra lord, so the exception applies. The part scores 8/8 and is marked "cancelled".

What if it is not cancelled?

First, check the arithmetic. Losing the 8 Nadi marks means the best possible total is 28. A match with a 0 for Nadi can still score 25 or more overall, which is a "good" match in the usual reading. Look at the other seven parts.

Then do the practical things families do:

  • Ask your pandit whether any further exception in their tradition applies.
  • Look at the rest of the picture: Manglik balance, the 7th house and Venus in each chart, and the dasha for each person. See Matchmaking: Beyond the Score.
  • Consider a health check if health is the concern behind the question. Many families do this regardless of the chart.

Remedies are discussed in some traditions, but nothing in the chart says you must perform them, and you should be wary of anyone who makes them sound urgent or expensive.

Questions families ask

Does Nadi dosha mean we cannot marry? No. It means the Nadi part scored 0 before exceptions. Plenty of couples with a Nadi match (and many with an exception) marry after the pandit has looked at the full chart.

Is Nadi checked from the boy's or the girl's side? Neither. It is a comparison of the two Moon nakshatras, so the result is the same whichever way you read it.

Does the birth time matter? Only if the Moon was close to a nakshatra or pada boundary. The Moon spends roughly a day in each nakshatra, so a few hours' error rarely changes the Nadi. If your pada is the deciding factor, confirm the birth time.

Two sites gave me different answers. Why? One may print the raw 0 while the other applies the exceptions. Compare the individual lines, not the totals. See Is 24 guna enough?.
