Manglik: Myths vs Facts

6 min read

Mangal dosh: kya sach mein problem hai? That is the question behind most worried phone calls between a parent and a child during marriage search. Someone at home has said "Manglik hai" and the mood changes.

Here is the calm version. Manglik means Mars sits in certain houses of a chart. It is common, it comes in grades, and tradition itself lists many cases where it is cancelled. It is a point to understand, not a reason to panic.

This page goes through the common myths and what the classical rules, as AstroCalc applies them, actually say. The long technical version is at The Manglik Dosha.

First, what is being checked

Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna is the classical rule. This is the main check. AstroCalc also looks, with lower weight, at:

  • Mars in the 2nd house (a milder, partial form)
  • Mars counted from the Moon, and from Venus (used by some schools)
  • Mars in the 5th, 6th, 9th or 10th, which can look at the main houses (an extended check from the Varanasi school)

This is why one site says "Manglik" and another says "not Manglik" for the same chart. They are using different schools. AstroCalc shows its reasoning so you can see which rule applied.

Myth 1: "Manglik means the marriage will fail, or the partner is at risk"

Fact. The traditional texts describe Mars as bringing heat, impatience and friction in marriage. They do not promise a bad ending. The strength of the effect depends on the grade, on the other planets, and mostly on how two people actually live. Fear-based predictions are not part of the classical method.

Myth 2: "A Manglik can only marry a Manglik"

Fact. Matching the two charts is one traditional approach, not the only one. When both people are Manglik, AstroCalc compares how strong each is. Similar strength is read as balanced. Levels one step apart are read as manageable. Levels far apart are marked as worth a conversation.

When only one person is Manglik, the app also looks at the partner's Saturn. Saturn in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th of the partner's chart is read as neutralising. Saturn in the 5th or 10th is read as a partial cushion. If neither applies, the app marks it as something to discuss with your pandit.

Myth 3: "There is one fixed answer, and every website must agree"

Fact. Schools differ. Some count Mars from the Lagna only. Some also count from the Moon and Venus. Some include the 2nd house. A three-way disagreement between sites is common. The useful question is not "Manglik, yes or no?" but "which rule, what grade, and is it cancelled?"

Myth 4: "It cannot be cancelled"

Fact. Classical texts list many cancellations. This is the part fear-based advice leaves out. See the next section.

Myth 5: "After 28 it is gone"

Fact. Tradition says Mars matures around 28. AstroCalc halves the strength score for people aged 28 or more. That softens the grade. It does not erase the placement, and it does not replace a proper cancellation check.

Myth 6: "A remedy or ritual is compulsory"

Fact. Rituals and remedies are a family and faith choice, and many families value them. AstroCalc's check does not treat a ritual as a requirement, and does not need one to reach its result.

The cancellations, in plain words

Before a Manglik result is called "present", AstroCalc checks these classical cancellations. If any full one applies, the result is shown as Cancelled.

Cancels it completely

Condition In plain words
Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn Mars is in its own sign or its exaltation sign. It is comfortable and disciplined, not restless.
Jupiter is with Mars, or looks at Mars Jupiter, the planet of wisdom, calms Mars.
Cancer or Leo Lagna For these Lagnas Mars is a very helpful planet, so it is not treated as a problem.
Aquarius or Capricorn Lagna, with Mars in the 4th or 8th Classical exception for those two Lagnas.
Mars in the 2nd house, in Gemini or Virgo Mercury's signs turn the energy into sharp speech, not harshness.
Mars in the 4th house, in Aries or Scorpio Own sign at home: protective, not disruptive.
Mars in the 7th house, in Cancer or Capricorn Weak (Cancer) or very strong and disciplined (Capricorn). Either way the usual effect does not follow.
Mars in the 8th house, in Sagittarius or Pisces Jupiter's signs steady Mars here.
Mars in the 12th house, in Taurus, Libra, Gemini or Virgo Venus or Mercury signs soften it.

Cancelled, with a note

If Rahu, Ketu or Saturn is with Mars (or Saturn looks at Mars), AstroCalc treats the Manglik as cancelled but also shows a note about that combination, since it brings its own temperament. "Cancelled" here does not mean "nothing to talk about", so read the note.

Softening factors, not counted as full cancellation

Mars with the Moon, and Mars in the 7th or 8th for Aries or Scorpio Lagna, are listed as softening factors. The app does not count them as a full cancellation, so the result stays on the cautious side.

Strength also goes down if Mars is within about 17 degrees of the Sun, in the first or last two degrees of its sign, or if the Moon is waning when Mars is counted from the Moon. Strength goes up if Mars is retrograde, or if it is also in a main house in the Navamsa chart.

The grades

  • None. No placement found.
  • Low. Only the milder checks fired (2nd house, Moon or Venus).
  • Medium and High. Mars is in a main house from the Lagna. The score decides which.
  • Severe. Main placement, also confirmed in the Navamsa, with a high score.
  • Cancelled. The placement exists, but a classical rule cancels it.

What to say when a relative panics

  1. "Which kind of Manglik? From the Lagna, or only from the Moon?"
  2. "Is it cancelled? Let us check the list."
  3. "If both have it, tradition calls that balanced."
  4. "Let us ask the pandit for the grade, not just yes or no."

A calm question does more than a quick argument. It also shows respect for the elders' concern.
