Bhakoot Dosha: The Moon-Sign Distance Rule

5 min read

Bhakoot is worth 7 out of 36 marks, the second-highest part of Guna Milan after Nadi. It is also the easiest part to understand, because it is just a count: how far apart are the two Moon signs?

When that distance lands on certain numbers, Bhakoot scores 0 and people say "Bhakoot dosha". Like Nadi, it is common and has recognised exceptions. This page shows how the count works, which distances are flagged, and when the 7 marks are given back.

How the count works

Take the Moon sign of each person. Count from one sign to the other, counting both signs. The signs in order are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces.

Example: one Moon in Aries and the other in Virgo. Aries is 1, Taurus 2, Gemini 3, Cancer 4, Leo 5, Virgo 6. The distance is 6. Counted from the other side, Virgo to Aries is 8. So this pair is a "6/8".

The count is the same whichever person you start from: if one direction is 2, the other is 12; if one is 5, the other is 9; if one is 6, the other is 8. That is why the flagged distances come in pairs.

Which distances are flagged

Distance Name What tradition says it touches
1/1, 1/7 Same sign or opposite signs Fine: full 7 marks
3/11, 4/10 Friendly angles Fine: full 7 marks
2/12 Dwirdwadash Money matters, spending habits
5/9 Nav-Pancham Family and children
6/8 Shadashtak Health and disagreements

In AstroCalc, 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 score 0, and every other distance scores the full 7. It is all or nothing. Classical sources do not agree on every detail: 5/9 is a friendly "trine" angle in most other parts of astrology, and some pandits treat it more gently here. AstroCalc follows the common Ashtakoota table and then checks for cancellation, which is why the cancellation rules below matter.

When Bhakoot dosha is cancelled

AstroCalc looks at the ruling planets (lords) of the two Moon signs. If either rule applies, the full 7 marks are given back and the part is shown as "cancelled".

1. Both Moon signs have the same lord. Aries and Scorpio are both ruled by Mars. Taurus and Libra are both ruled by Venus. Capricorn and Aquarius are both ruled by Saturn. These three pairs land on flagged distances (6/8, 6/8 and 2/12), but because one planet rules both signs, the dosha is cancelled.

2. The two lords are mutual friends. The lords must be friends of each other, not just one-way. In the classical friendship table, the mutual friends are:

  • Sun and Moon
  • Sun and Mars
  • Sun and Jupiter
  • Mars and Jupiter
  • Mercury and Venus
  • Venus and Saturn

Examples of cancellation:

  • Cancer and Leo (distance 2/12): the lords are the Moon and the Sun, who are mutual friends. Cancelled.
  • Aries and Leo (distance 5/9): Mars and the Sun are mutual friends. Cancelled.
  • Aries and Sagittarius (distance 5/9): Mars and Jupiter are mutual friends. Cancelled.
  • Taurus and Capricorn (distance 5/9): Venus and Saturn are mutual friends. Cancelled.

When it stays a 0

If the lords are different planets and not mutual friends, Bhakoot stays at 0. For instance, Gemini and Scorpio (distance 6/8): Mercury and Mars are not friends. Cancer and Sagittarius (distance 6/8): the Moon regards Jupiter as neutral, so it is not mutual friendship. In these cases the 7 marks are lost.

Even then, the practical picture is manageable. A 0 in Bhakoot leaves 29 as the best possible total, which is still a "good" match in the usual bands (25 and above). A pair that scores 0 here but is strong in the other seven parts is a perfectly reasonable match.

What tradition means by it, and what it doesn't

The classical idea is that Bhakoot measures the emotional and practical rhythm between two families: how money, health and household matters flow. A 6/8 or 2/12 distance is said to put the two people on "different sides" of each other's life areas.

This is a traditional lens, and it does not predict a specific event. No chart says a couple with a 6/8 Moon distance will be poor or ill. What a flagged distance can do is prompt a useful conversation: how will we handle money together, and how do we each want to look after family?

What to do if yours is flagged

  1. Check cancellation first. The free check shows it automatically.
  2. Look at the other parts. Gana (6 marks), Nadi (8) and Graha Maitri (5) say a lot about daily harmony.
  3. Ask your pandit whether their tradition applies further exceptions.
  4. Talk it through. The two people matter more than the number.
